Goodwill Industries Of Central Texas held a Community Advisory Council Luncheon Meeting on Thursday, October 2 to address the challenges that youth face as they enter the workforce, and to discuss ways Goodwill, businesses, and the community can overcome these challenges.
More than 25 community and business leaders and field experts came to the Goodwill Community Center for this luncheon, which is held twice a year and designed to seek out advice and support from the community that will further strengthen our employment services and solidify strategic partnerships that allow us to better serve Central Texas.
The luncheon proved to be productive, as attendees explored the barriers that youth are currently facing as they transition from academia into the workforce, and to discuss the best practices that their businesses currently have or can incorporate to enhance their ability to recruit, train and hire at-risk youth.
Special guest speaker Tim Eubanks from Austin Voices for Education and Youth stressed the importance of giving youth choices. He said that connecting education and careers together may provide youth with the training and opportunities they need to become successful members of the workforce.
One of the ways that Goodwill is addressing the issue is through our WIA Youth Services, funded by Workforce Solutions, Greater Austin Area Workforce Development Board. This program is designed to provide employment and education services to youth age 14-22. Click here for more information on this program.
