Being a single mother of an infant and a toddler, every day is a struggle for Virginia Sanchez. When her father passed away three years ago, she was left with no one to help raise her children. Virginia came to Goodwill in 2005 with very little work history and no stable shelter. She faced many challenges; but despite her obstacles, she continuously strives to be the best mother possible for her children.
When Virginia had nowhere else to turn, Foundation for the Homeless provided her and her kids with transitional shelter. She jumped from church to church for weeks through the Interfaith Hospitality Network program while trying to find steady employment.
“Being homeless was the hardest thing I’ve ever lived through,” Virginia said. “It was hard for me to get up and leave the shelter to find work everyday when I was always worried for my kids.”
Virginia needed assistance in the job search process but didn’t know where to turn. She had been working at a convenience store for eight months but wanted to find a job that offered a flexible schedule so she could better care for her children. She also wanted job growth opportunities but felt she lacked the confidence and skills necessary.
Virginia first came to Goodwill and applied for a cashier position in a retail store. That was two years ago. She has since left the shelter program, maintaining stable housing for her family. She has learned new job skills in a nurturing environment, and has proved herself to be a valuable employee to Goodwill. Most importantly, she has caring managers who tailor her schedule to the needs of her children. .
“Nicole [S. Lamar assistant manager] is great and understanding,” Virginia said. “She works with me so I can pick my kids up from school—they get out at different times.”.
Ready for a new challenge, Virginia is currently working with a placement specialist at a Job Help Center to find an office job. Goodwill is providing her with job search assistance, résumé writing assistance and interviewing skills she will need to secure a better future for her and her children. With determination and a family focus, Virginia continues to grow each day.
