When Galinda Garza came to Goodwill, she was uncertain about her future and weary about seeking assistance. Now, she has a clear direction and the confidence she needs to remain self-sufficient and successful in her career.

Galinda entered the WIA Youth Services Program, funded by Workforce Solutions, The Greater Austin Area Workforce Development Board, in July of 2005 as an expectant mother in need of extra help and support with graduating from high school and planning for her and her child’s future. She was connected with Case Manager Melissa Nettle and received intensive case management, tutoring, basic needs assistance, and help with childcare.

“Galinda is determined,” said Melissa. “She wanted to provide a better life for herself and for her son. That was her drive.”

With Goodwill’s help, Galinda was able to overcome academic challenges and successfully graduate from high school. Shortly after, she gave birth to a baby boy. With the arrival of her new responsibilities as a mother, she knew that she needed to further develop her skills and pursue a career.

Galinda worked with her case manager to develop a strategic plan that would provide her son with childcare while she continued her education. Determined to pursue a career as a Dental Assistant, Galinda studied for several weeks and passed her test to enter Allied Health Careers.

“Melissa helped me set goals that I could reach, and, once I achieved my goals, I felt better,” said Galinda. “It wasn’t just about a prize; it was about accomplishing something.”

After graduation, Galinda was able to achieve full-time employment as a Dental Assistant at an established office. She enjoys her position, and is looking forward to continuing her career in the dental field. With the success of her new career, Galinda was able to move into her own condo with her son.

“I am happier now that I came to Goodwill,” said Galinda.
