James Fowler

Community Rehabilitation Services

Watch video about James.

Eager to gain the independence that a full-time job would offer him, James Fowler came to Goodwill in 2006 through the Community Rehabilitation Program. After losing his job in 2003, James experienced difficulty locating an employer that would hire him. James has developmental delays and characteristics associated with Down syndrome, a chromosomal disorder. This disability hindered him from gaining full-time employment on his own for three years, so he had to move back home with his parents.

“The most difficult part was finding a good place to work and seeing if the managers were ok with a person with a disability working for them,” said James.

At Goodwill, he was connected with his Placement Specialist Eileen Carroll. She gave James assistance with the job search process, including helping with job leads, filling out applications, interview coaching, transportation to interviews, and contacting potential employers.

In order to build his skills and expand his employment opportunities, he needed extra coaching that would teach him how to effectively communicate and interact with others. After working with Eileen, he became more confident in social situations. “James is always very positive and has a smile on his face,” said Eileen. “When we were searching for a position, he remained motivated and open to different job opportunities.” His determination, along with his positive and laid-back nature, allowed James to successfully locate a position at Luby’s Cafeteria, where he has been employed as a busser for two years.

“We filled out the application form and got to know everyone at Luby’s and the managers. We would call them to see if they’re willing to hire someone with a disability,” said James. “It was a very great experience interviewing with my first two bosses. I was very excited when I was hired. My dad was tickled pink when he found out.”

James continues to thrive in a work environment that requires excellent customer service. Even after achieving employment, Eileen continues to keep in touch with James to ensure he is still doing well and enjoying his job.

Currently living in his own apartment near where he works, James’s position has given him a renewed sense of independence, and he continues to have a positive outlook about his future.
