David Johnson joined the WIA Youth Services program, funded by Workforce Solutions—Capital Area, in January of 2009 as a student seeking assistance with preparing himself for life after high school.
Looking at David’s academic achievements, you would never know that he needed extra help with building his basic skills. A member of the National Honors Society, David is also an integral member of the Soul Train Drum line at his high school, is the secretary for his high school class of 2009, and a member of the Peer Assisted Learning System (PALS), a peer-based tutorial program.
Working together with his Goodwill Case Manager, David received assistance with building his foundational skills, developing and setting his goals, and exploring different career paths. At Goodwill, David’s high aspirations for his future were translated into a plan that would make his goals attainable.
Over the course of his senior year, David’s determination allowed him to maintain a high GPA and keep up with his school activities all while working part-time at Domino’s. David’s hard work paid-off when he received a $20,000 scholarship to Texas A&M University, where he will be attending school in the fall. He also received a $10,000 Rotary Club Scholarship, which will help him to continue to pursue his dream of working in the computer networking field at a company like Dell or IBM. David was also accepted at Prairie View A&M University and the University of Texas at Austin.
