“Viva Verde, Live Green” Program
Larry Franklin came into Goodwill’s “Viva Verde, Live Green” program, funded by Workforce Solutions—Capital Area, in search of a summer internship, but what he found was the push that he needed to ignite his dreams of becoming a real estate developer.
A natural leader with a drive to succeed, Larry, 22, was placed in a supervisory role at Austin Green Art. There, he oversaw a variety of projects, including landscaping. He came to be known among his peers for his strength of character, and he proved to be a valuable team player with a keen eye for excellence.
During his 5 week internship, he was connected with a Case Manager, who provided him with work-readiness training that would ensure a valuable work-based learning experience. Coming from a background of poverty, Larry also received assistance that would help him to pursue his aspirations of continuing his education by going to college.
“This position has helped me as a person,” said Larry, “See, in the position that I am in I am asked to work with many different students, and in return, my leadership, people and communication skills have grown.”
Upon Larry’s completion of the program, his motivation and drive was only further ignited. He began to form a support team for young African Americans that focuses on city council involvement and environmental issues, such as waste management. Additionally, Larry has enrolled in Austin Community College to pursue his dream of becoming a real estate developer.
Looking back at his experience in the program, Larry said. “…. a star is on the rise.”
