Wayman Phillips came to Goodwill through the Job Source Program in October of 2008 after searching for a job for nearly a year. He had just begun classes at Kaplan University, and he was hoping to locate a full-time job that would allow him to continue his education and jump-start his future.
During his first meeting with his Goodwill Placement Specialist, Wayman’s confidence was clear. He said, “If I can get an interview, I can get a job.”
The tough job market, along with a past criminal charge, made his job search even more difficult. At Goodwill, Wayman was able to brush-up his resume, cover letter and interviewing skills as well as receive leads for jobs. His determination and persistence allowed him to quickly land an interview and--as he predicted--a job. In order to ensure success at his new position as a Pipeline Technician for The City of Austin’s Water and Wastewater Department, Goodwill helped him to obtain the necessary work boots.
For the past 11 months, Wayman has successfully maintained his employment with the City of Austin. To further his opportunities with the City, he recently acquired a Class B CDL with a tanker endorsement. He is poised to become a crew leader early next year.
In addition to the advances Wayman has made at work, he has continued making strides academically. In February, he is expected to receive an Associates Degree in Business Administration from Kaplan University.
