After just six months, being named a Goodwill Job Source graduate of the month was only the beginning of a new path for Deborah Lee. Deborah relocated to Austin, Texas, due to Hurricane Katrina where she lost everything. She found herself in a challenging situation of getting acclimated to the different city with its own culture, climate and job market.
“It was difficult being dependent on the kindness of strangers,” Deborah says.
In February 2006, Deborah sought assistance from Goodwill Job Source . “During our work on her job search, it was always foremost in Deborah's mind that her job involve being of service to others,” said Prince Rahman, placement specialist.
Since her previous employment included food service and custodial work, she has continued using these skills by working in the food service department at Westminster Manor. Deborah says she loves the job because her co-workers are friendly, the pay and hours are good plus the benefits she receives.
“Prince is a very nice guy, and he really reached out to help give me more information about schools so I can go get a diploma,” she said.
Deborah's tireless dedication in helping others is an integral characteristic that is important to her. Prince explained her commitment was a part of her life in Louisiana, where she and her husband devoted time and energy to ministering members of their community.
“I even received help with having a false background report corrected,” said Deborah.
Deborah and her husband are determined in establishing a center in Austin to help house the homeless, provide counseling, life skills, education, job-related training and mentoring. They want to help people restore dignity, become healthier and self-sufficient through holistic services.
“The Hall of Honor distinction is very exciting for me,” Deborah said. “The award and experience is a story I can tell my grandchildren about one day.”
