LaBerta DePriest

LaBerta DePriest

In April 2006 LaBerta DePriest entered Goodwill's Job Source program for assistance with her search for work—something she hadn't done in many years. Her 25-year marriage had recently ended and she was starting a new life for herself as an independent woman in a new city.

For LaBerta it was a difficult time in her life, and the process of applying for work was intimidating. Through Goodwill's Job Source program, she gained experience with interviewing skills, writing her resume, and a host of services through case management to support her throughout her search for work and beyond.

“My search for work was hard and I didn't think I could do it,” she said. “But Charles [Briscoe] was always there to motivate and help me.”

It wasn't easy at the beginning. Within a few weeks of coming to Goodwill for support services, a data entry position with Travis County became available through Goodwill Staffing Services. It was a good fit for LaBerta and would be a great way for her to get her feet on the ground with a new job, but she first had to be assessed for basic office and computer skills.

“I was very intimidated about taking the tests,” she said. “But I passed! And then I said to myself ‘I can do this.'”

LaBerta began to gain confidence in her new job and her performance was rewarded in August when her employer offered her a permanent position at a better wage. She is now working for Travis County as an office specialist, where she supports the work of the probation officers. She calls it “the best job ever.” LaBerta's supervisor, Michelle Paiz says, “ Laberta is such a testament of determination and success!  I'm very glad she was sent our way!”

Today LaBerta DePriest represents some of the best of what Goodwill can offer. Her courage and determination are what started her on her path to success. Now equipped with a great job, she is building a solid work history and paving the way to a bright future.
